Why a scalp treatment?

Scalp treatments offer a range of benefits which include healthier hair growth, moisturized scalp, decreased dandruff and many more benefits. Scalp treatments first came around during the early stages of mankind and people still use this method to this day. In terms of results, this is something that you may not immediately notice, but over time it will show the best results as scalp treatments help to nourish the scalp, leaving the hair growth looking much better.

Scalp care

Scalp care is an essential you need to incorporate into your haircare routine. The roots of your hair grow from within the scalp, and this is where it gets all the nutrients to give you healthy hair growth. If you don’t take care of your scalp, you may find that you struggle with problematic hair issues such as stumped hair growth, hair breakage, dry hair and split ends. It is important to ensure you take care of your scalp in the correct way and we’ve compiled some easy steps to help get you the results you need with minimal effort at home in between your regular barbershop visits.

Step 1: Prep The Scalp

To prep the scalp, start off with a light exfoliation. To do this you can comb through your hair to ensure all dead skin on your scalp is being lifted. This will allow the products to penetrate your scalp and do its job correctly. While doing this, ensure to apply enough pressure as you are combing through your scalp. Don’t however press too hard as you don’t want to create irritation on your scalp. An alternative can be to purchase a scalp exfoliator or exfoliating shampoo that can do this as well. This will help lift the dandruff or dry skin, if any, from your scalp and will also help with the circulation of the blood on your scalp which essentially helps regenerate your hair follicles. Start off by doing this in sections, you can start with the front and work your way to the back so that you can get into a good rhythm.

Step 2: Product Selection:

For this step, you should be using products that are tailored to your hair type. Also ensure that the shampoo and conditioner are doing their job by picking one that allows for the proper cleaning of the scalp. Try to use products a such as caffeinated shampoos and conditioners that can assist in hair growth while also nourishing the hair follicles that are already there. Your shampoo is especially important as this is what you are going to use the help get rid of any additional build up on your scalp to remove it after the scalp treatment. Conditioners should not be lathered on your scalp and should rather be put on the ends of your hair as this will help protect and coat the follicles from any damage. In terms of scalp treatment, you want to stay away from anything that has too many chemicals in it. Products that make use of too many harmful chemicals might give you a quick fix, however later down the line you won’t have the desired results you would get if you used more natural and organic products.

Step 3 – Apply Scalp Treatment

To apply the scalp treatment, it’s easy and simple. Apply scalp treatment to head and massage into scalp. Leave to sit on your scalp for 10-15 mins (dependent on product you are using). Once you have waited the recommended time, rinse out scalp treatment with lukewarm to cold water. Hot water could strip your hair of its nutrients so be sure to have the water at a lower temperature. Once you’ve rinsed out the scalp treatment proceed with your shampoo and conditioning.

Step 4 – Shampoo and Conditioning time

Once you’ve rinsed out the scalp treatment, you can go in with your preferred shampoo and conditioner. Make sure when using your shampoo, you are using it correctly. Pump however much you need out depending on your hair length, lather between your hands and apply onto scalp. From there, you need to massage the scalp with the shampoo to ensure you are reaching every part of the scalp correctly. What also helps is getting a head massager to use during this routine that can help ensure you are getting everywhere on your scalp, with added benefits of creating better circulation and an added mini scalp massage which feels great. From there, you rinse your hair and apply conditioner. Remember to not smother your scalp full of conditioner as this is what causes build up and the main purpose of conditioner is to coat and protect hair strands from brakeage so it’s best to not apply on scalp. Remember when shampooing or rinsing hair, use lukewarm to cold water as hot water is not good for your hair.

Step 5 – Dry & Style

It’s important to use as little heat on your hair as possible as this is what tends to cause dryness in hair. Try to apply as little heat as possible when styling and use the correct styling products for your hair type. Try to not use too much product when styling as this can cause product buildup on your scalp and you would need to do this routine more frequently. This could lead to an unhealthy scalp which could cause stunted hair growth or hair loss, dryness, breakage, etc.
